Firestone had to undertake a massive tire recall back in 2000 involving tires made for SUVs. Out of some 14 million sold, the approximately 6.5 million still on the road were recalled.

The story, highlighted by numerous rollover deaths, remained in the news for months, and had a severe impact on the manufacturer. Among other things, angry consumers often were told that replacement tires were not in stock. The recall did not go smoothly. Congressional investigations followed, and new tire safety legislation was enacted.

Reminiscent of those days are two recent tire recalls involving the same defect that prompted the 2000 recall, namely tread separation and high failure rates, risking dangerous blowouts. The danger is exacerbated in hot summer months.

Now, as if there are not enough woes with recalls of Chinese products, you can to the list of tire recalls some 450,000 tires imported from China. This recall is especially troublesome as will become evident from the story.

The current problem arises out of instances of tread separation of truck tires sold to U.S. distributors. The tires are light truck radials imported from the Hangzhou Zhongce Rubber Co. located in Hangzhou, China. The problem is compounded by the fact that the recall does not involve a manufacturer that has a large U.S presence like Firestone.

In fact, the importer is a small New Jersey company with only six employees which lacks the funds to implement a recall. It doesn't even have a warehouse. Apparently the tires are drop shipped from the manufacturer directly to U.S. distributors. The Chinese company is not being cooperative according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) Autel MaxiTPMS PAD. There allegedly have been two rollover deaths attributable to the tires.

The NHTSA has received some criticism based on indications that it was informed of the problem as early as 2005 and took no action.

Another recall just occurred (in 2007) involving the Cooper Tire & Rubber Co. Again, the hazard is tread separation dangers with about 92,000 light truck tires. Cooper denies that there is any defect, but is cooperating in doing a recall. Cooper had previously imported tires from the Hangzhou manufacturer, but ceased in 2005. The tires recalled in 2007 were made in the U.S. Cooper is the second largest U.S. tire manufacturer.

While it's comforting to know the these defects are being identified, it seems that from a consumer perspective, the massive recall in 2000, coupled with subsequent federal legislation, ought to have eliminated tread separation problems Autel MaxiPRO MP808TS. Evidently this is not the case. Obviously, consumers should not be complacent about tire safety concerns which continue to plague the tire industry in the form of tread separation dangers.
Robert G.
Motor oil, or what some of us refer to as dinosaur oil, can be a nuisance to handle and problematic when you don't know the proper way of disposal. But there is help. Recycling the icky sticky oil is good for the environment. In fact, in most states it is illegal to pour it down the drain or throw it away in the trash.

It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out why. Just in case you don't know, here's a reminder: pouring used oil down a drain or storm sewer will eventually cause it to seep into streams, lakes, or the wetlands. This causes a lot of innocent animal life to become coated with oil and eventually may cause their death autel ds808. Oil sticks to everything from bird feathers to beach sand. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency says that used oil from one oil change can contaminate one million gallons of fresh water. That's a year's supply for 50 people. Along with causing death and destruction or getting yourself a big fat fine, there are many horrible effects of not spending the time that is necessary to recycle your motor oil. This is why we have published ways you can recycle your engine oil safely and effectively.

Put your used oil in a clean plastic container and make sure it has a tight lid. Don't mix the oil with any other gases Autel MaxiTPMS PAD, solvents, or antifreeze. Keep it as pure as engine oil can be. This insures that every drop of it will be suitable for recycling. Take your used oil to a nearby recycling center, a service station, an oil change business, or any other location that will accept oil. If you can't find a place near you, try looking online by doing a simple onlne search for "recycle oil" and the name of your city or town. 99% of the time a local oil change business that recycles oil will pop up.

Not only can you recycle the oil, but you can also properly dispose of the used oil filter. After you take out the old oil filter, drain the oil out of it by punching an air hole in the top. Let the filter completely drain. It takes about 12-24 hours to do. Then you can safely dispose of it.

There are plenty of reasons why recycling motor oil is the right thing to do. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency says that on average, about four million people reuse motor oil as a lubricant for equipment or at a recycling facility. Nowadays, we can take motor oil and re-refine it into new oil, using it as raw material for petroleum industries. One gallon of used motor oil provides the same 2.5 quarts of lubricating oil as 42 gallons of crude oil.

If you are still unsure of the proper way to recycle motor oil, then leave it to the experts. There are plenty of oil change businesses across America, and finding one in your neighborhood will not be a challenge. If you choose to change your oil yourself, then become the four million and one used motor oil recycler! With everyone's help, we could start to eliminate much of our foreign oil need.
In 2003, when I started in the wonderful sport of triathlon, I made it a goal to finish an Ironman. You know the deal: 2.4 mile swim, 112 mile bike, 26.2 mile marathon. While the race itself seems crazy, it's really the training that is the most difficult part. More specifically, for many people, it is finding the time to train enough to finish an Ironman.

At the time, I was in law school. Fast forward to 2008, when I started training for my first Ironman. I was working full time with a family. I had limited time to train. So I set up my training schedule accordingly, and I still use it today.

1) Monday Long Run:

When I first started training, I was a weekend warrior. I spent the majority of my time training on Saturday and Sunday. This included my long run. But then I realized that getting out and running is easier than getting to the pool and swimming or setting up my bike and riding. Why did my long run need to be on a Saturday? So I moved it to Monday Autel MaxiTPMS PAD, and I've had great results. The only time it has caused me some discomfort is when my schedule called for a twenty mile run for which I needed to wake up extra early.

2) Tuesday Recovery Bike:

After Sunday's long ride and Monday's long run, this recovery ride is very easy and relatively short. At most, I'll spin for sixty minutes in the small chain ring. The point is recovery, so swallow your pride.

3) Wednesday Swim:

For the most part, I only swim once per week, so I try to make the most of it. I start with a long, slow warm up, followed by some speed work, then finish with some longer intervals. Occasionally, I will make it one continuous long swim, just to get the distance in. I know that swimming will never be my strength.

4) Thursday Bike:

My Thursday bike is longer than Tuesday, and more challenging. I try to make it a harder effort, at a higher pace, and with hills. In the winter, I will substitute an outdoor ride for a spinning class or a ride on my trainer.

5) Friday Run:

My Friday run is reserved for tempo or speed work. While people have different definitions of tempo, I generally regard it as a ten to fifteen minute warm up, followed by twenty-five to forty minutes of lactate threshold pace, followed by a ten minute cool down. If I am at the point in my training plan that calls for speed work, then I will run 800-meter repeats, with a proper warm up and cool down.

6) Saturday Strength Training:

I only lift weights once per week. I just don't have time to do any more than that Autel MaxiSys Pro. Something has to give. But I make the session worthwhile, by doing a circuit of five exercises and repeating the circuit four times. I also work my abs for about twenty minutes, which usually ends up being around eight sets with a short rest in between.

7) Sunday Long Bike:

To keep up the base of my endurance, I try my hardest to make this at least fifty miles. But the point is to get a longer bike in every week on a consistent basis. The distance will vary depending on your goals and endurance level.

Two more tips:

First, after every bike session, I pull on my running shoes and head out for at least a mile. This is a good habit to get into for help with the transition from bike to run.

Second, as I get into the higher volume weeks of my training plan, I add a second swim session on Saturdays. This session is usually very short, just to stretch my arms out.
Triathlon is not only fun, it is also a great way to keep fit.
The BMW 5 series first generation was unveiled for the first time 37 years ago. To date, the vehicle has sold more than 5,555,555 units since its introduction. The 2011 BMW 5 series has come a long way in advancement compared to what the first generation 5-series offered. The new 5-series offers unbelievable technology and safety innovation, high-performance engine power with fuel efficiency, and sleek design.

The BMW 5 Series has long been considered the leader of the pack in the midsize sports sedan class. Setting benchmarks in style and performance is a typical achievement for the 5-series. The 2011 Series created some new features of its own and borrowed some innovations from the 7-series to complete the total package.

The 2011 5-series comes with 5 different trim levels: 528i, 535i, 535i xDrive, 550i, and 550i xDrive trim. The i-models use BMW's fuel-injected engine and the xDrive is their all wheel drive system.

EfficientDynamics is technology for BMW's vehicles that produce less emissions and more driving pleasure. Fuel efficiency was a focal point for upgrading the new 5-series as BMW implemented multiple EfficentDynamics components. The first efficiency upgrade for the new 5-series was by putting in 8-speed automatic transmissions. The smooth transition from gear to gear significantly reduced fuel consumption while delivering supreme power and speed Autel MaxiPRO MP808TS.

BMW's Brake Energy Regeneration concept was the next step for the new 5-series. When the accelerator is released or the brake is applied, the generator takes the kinetic energy of the vehicle and turns it into electricity to charge the battery. The battery doesn't take away the engine's power to charge it, thus allowing the engine to perform at a higher rate and conserve fuel Autel MaxiSys MS906BT.

Electric Power Steering was the third major component of EfficientDynamics to improve the fuel efficiency. Rather than a continuous hydraulic pump, the electric motor for power steering allows the energy only to be used when the car is actually turning.

Overall, the 5-series boasts great fuel efficiency and power. The 528i Sedan offers 32 mpg hwy with 240 horsepower, 535i nets 30 mpg hwy and 300 horsepower, 535i xDrive gets 29 mpg hwy with 300 horsepower, 550i obtains 25 mpg hwy and 400 horsepower, and 550i xDrive boasted 24 mpg hwy with 400 horsepower. The 528 and 535 models utilize an inline-6 cylinder-engine while the 550 models use a turbocharged 8-cyclinder engine.

The 2011 5-series added performance features to mimic the quick, sporty, and tight handling of the 3-series but boasts interior luxury and technology to feel like the inside of the 7 series. Safety was at the forefront on both performance and interior improvements.

For performance, the Adaptive Drive feature allows drivers to switch from comfort, normal and sport driving styles that vary in engine response. The Adaptive Drive also has Active-Roll Stabilization and Dynamic Damping Control to help you slide through turns easy with comfort and control, while keeping the car level to avoid rollovers.

In addition, the active cruise control feature gives drivers a new highway experience. The system allows drivers to set the speed they want to cruise at, and by utilizing the vehicle range sensors (range of 650 feet), the car will automatically slow down to a safe speed and distance if there is an upcoming vehicle in the lane. The vehicle will then regain normal speed when there are no obstructions ahead.

Safety features on the interior are headlined by the addition of the Head Up Display on the new 5-series. The display system keeps driver's eyes on the road by clearly displaying stats and information on the windshield of the car. The display shows a drivers speed, upcoming navigation turns, and alerts for possible obstructions. The 5-series also has a night vision infrared camera that can detect upcoming obstructions from 900 feet away.

Finally, BMW installed a five camera system on the new 5-series. The five camera system allows drivers more visibility while driving and parking.

The system also allows for the park assist feature to be utilized. The parking system will park the car for the driver as well as use its sensors to determine open parking spots. While it parks for the driver, the driver controls the accelerator and brake. No more worries about whether the car fits in the spot or not.

The improvements on the 2011 BMW 5-series are major enhancements to safety, fuel efficiency, performance and style. The recent BMW 5-series TV commercial ended with the "Ultimate Driving Machine" tagline that was always used until last year's new ad campaign. With all that the 2011 BMW 5-series brings to the table, it only seemed right to bring back that tagline for the ultimate midsize sport sedan.
Hendrick Motors BMW, located in Hickory, NC, carries a great selection of new, used and certified BMW vehicles.
